A surgical team from Baptist Health South Florida traveled to Haiti on Feb 11- 14 to perform OB/GYN and General surgeries for the poor in Haiti.
We were blessed with another great trip – safe travel, great team spirit, and an amazing number of surgeries performed on the trip.
This trip was a little unique, as on Saturday night, after we had closed down the operating rooms in preparation for our Sunday morning departure, and had dinner – two patients showed up with extreme abdominal pain.
Our team jumped back into action, performing an emergency hernia repair on one patient who had an Incarcerated hernia. The other patient had a perforated ulcer, so on our trip to the airport Sunday, several of the team took him to the local hospital, where we arranged for him to have surgery, and a week's stay in their hospital. We paid for his care, which at $950 total, was affordable considering the life saving surgery he needed.
